The two-month-old Neko Case album reminds me of two things.
1. Randy Austin is surely pissed she's crouching on the hood of a beautiful GTO in the
cover shot. Don't stand on the hood! the GTO and body guy says. And he's right.
2. The album, Neko Case's "Middle Cyclone", is just dandy. Sure. Fine. And if she'd tried to sound more like Kirsty MacColl she could not have done so. Exact. Ly.
So I'm reminded that Kirsty MacColl is dead. Dead by odd and sad and corrupt circumstances. That beautiful voice silenced, the bright eyes dimmed. I'm hardly the biggest Kirsty MacColl fan on the globe, but I sure enjoyed her performances.
It's the way she
died almost nine years ago, the lag in me finding out about it, that make it such a pointedly terrible tale.
I see she would have been 50 this year.
Nice album, Neko. You're no Kirsty.
